Abstract
NOTE: Text or symbols not renderable in plain ASCII are indicated by [...]. Abstract is included in .pdf document. The system of pseudoscalar meson and baryon octets is examined for spontaneous breakdown of SU(3) symmetry in a bootstrap theory with vanishing renormalization constants. The latter are calculated in second order perturbation theory; the splittings are taken to retain SU(2) symmetry and are included to first order only. The equations are diagonalized in the dimension of the representations. The F-D mixing parameter [alpha] is found to have the value 3/4. The system shows great instability in the [...] representation, and two solutions exist for not unreasonable values of the coupling constant and the meson-baryon mass ratio; one of the solutions has the observed relative signs for the mass splittings and exhibits a coupling splitting pattern found by other workers. A solution exists in the [...] representation with a coupling constant squared which is two orders of magnitude too large.
