Abstract
The optical rotatory power of a fluid system of molecules is calculated. The result is the same as obtained by previous investigators using similar but less satisfactory arguments. Various means of calculating the optical activity of a substance are discussed, one previously used by Kirkwood being employed to discuss theoretically the absolute configurations of trans-2,3-epoxybutane, 1,2-dichloropropane and 1,2-dibromopropane. An experimental investigation of the molecular structure of 1,2-dichloropopane by electron diffraction methods is described.
