Abstract

The behavior of flat, unstiffened panels was investigated for two length over width ratios and five thicknesses. In each case the panels were loaded until they failed. An empirical relation was developed for the variation of the ultimate combined shear and compression stress of the form [...]. The values of m and n were found to be: m = 1.65 and n = .9 for panels with length over width ratio equal to 2, and m = 1.4 and n = 1.3 for panels with length over width ratio equal to 1 1/3. The above equations agree very closely with the experimental results. There was a variation in the apparent shear modulus under different combined loading conditions, but no definite result was obtained.
