Abstract

NOTE: Text or symbols not renderable in plain ASCII are indicated by [...]. Abstract is included in .pdf document.

Single [...] and [...] photoproduction rates from deuterium have been measured at the Caltech 1.5 GeV electron synchrotron at 32 photon energies between 585 and 1250 MeV and for 13 CM pion angles between 6 and 160° at each energy. The cross section for the reaction [...] has been calculated via the [...] ratio from deuterium and via the spectator model for the deuteron.

A partial wave analysis has been done on the reactions [...] and [...] in the region of the second and third photoproduction resonances using the model of R. L. Walker. The results show some disagreements with recent quark theories. A case is made for the possibility that the [...] (1535) is excited by isoscalar photons, in agreement with some results of [...] photoproduction experiments, and in disagreement with quark theory. Finally, the helicity 3/2 component of the [...] (1688) resonance in [...] photoproduction is seen to be small, but not zero as predicted by the quark model.
